Boys lift Carib title
Bermuda boys? squash team were crowned kings of the Caribbean this week thanks to an exciting 3-2 triumph over hosts Jamaica in the team final of the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships.
The victory at the Liguanea Club in Kingston was the local team?s first since 1998 ? although because the girls? team finished fifth, Bermuda ultimately placed second in the overall standings behind Guyana.
In the highly-anticipated boys? final, Jamaica got off to a flying start in the opening match when Dane Schwier beat Chris Sgobba of Bermuda in straight set 3-0 (9-6, 9-0, 9-7), in the under-19 category.
Schwier?s team-mate Bruce Burrowes then lost to under-17 singles champion Robert Maycock in straight games ? 6-9, 9-0, 9-0 ? to get Bermuda back on level terms at 1-1.
But Chris Binnie, Jamaica?s number one under-19 player, and winner of the singles title in the individual event, scored a swift 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-0) win over top local junior Andrew Stout.
Though up against it at 2-1 down in matches, Bermuda had an ace in the hole in the form of under-13 singles champion Noah Browne. And though the talented youngster was extended to four games before beating Ashante Smith 9-4, 9-3, 7-9, 9-2, the result was never really in doubt and the rubber was level at 2-2.
In the fifth and deciding match, Micah Franklin was the hero, holding his nerve under the most intense pressure to beat Dilup Mahapa Mudali 9-5, 9-3, 9-2 in the under-15 match-up ? sending the Bermudian contingent into raptures.
