Woman claims she was attacked by boy's mum after protecting him from car

Kahla Saltus is accused of assaulting Verlicher Glasgow after an incident involving her child near the Building Blocks Academy.

A mother told Magistrates' Court yesterday that she was attacked outside a school after pulling a child out of the way of a moving car.Verlicher Glasgow, 37, claimed that 31-year-old Kahla Saltus struck her repeatedly in the face during a heated argument outside Building Blocks Academy on North Street. However lawyer Michaela Clamens, representing the defendant, suggested that Mrs Glasgow had “blasted” Ms Saltus' ability to raise a child.Ms Saltus, from Marley Beach Drive, Southampton, is on trial for assaulting Mrs Glasgow, causing actual bodily harm while in an increased penalty zone on July 17.Taking the stand yesterday, Mrs Glasgow said that on the day in question she was walking by Building Blocks Academy when she saw Ms Saltus and her son. She said Ms Saltus was using a cell phone and her son, who appeared to be three or four years old, was eating a snow cone.Mrs Glasgow said she noticed a driver in the area was reversing her car towards the child and reached out to protect him.“I reached to grab the little boy out of the way,” Mrs Glasgow said. “I wanted to ensure that he didn't get knocked down.”She then told the court that she shouted at the defendant, saying: “Pay attention and get off your cell phone.”Mrs Glasgow said Ms Saltus responded aggressively, shouting: “Don't tell me what to do with my God damn child.”“She was rambling on that I said her son smelled, et cetera,” Mrs Glasgow said. “I was asking her what she was talking about. It was just going on and on. I said I tried to help you.”Mrs Glasgow said that Ms Saltus then began to strike her, hitting her repeatedly in the left side of her face until members of the public pulled them apart. Once they were separated, Mrs Glasgow said her attacker quickly crossed the street and got on a bus, leaving her shaken and stunned. As a result of the incident, Mrs Glasgow suffered swelling near her left temple, along with scratches on her face and left forearm. While she said she did not personally know her attacker, she did know her son as she had been providing him lunch.Under cross examination, Mrs Glasgow told the court that she had told Ms Saltus: “You better watch how you speak to me. I'm the one who feeds your son.”She also admitted speaking aggressively during the incident, but said that she was only trying to make sure she could be heard over Ms Saltus' shouting.Mrs Glasgow also admitted in cross examination that she had spoken to the defendant's sister at Ice Queen about Ms Saltus and her son a month before the altercation. While she said that she was speaking out of concern, Ms Clamens suggested that Mrs Glasgow berated and bashed how Ms Saltus was raising her son.Mrs Glasgow said that she at no point said the care Ms Saltus was giving her son was inadequate, but agreed that she didn't consider how her message would be conveyed to Ms Saltus.Sgt Andrew Rollin told the court that at around 5.05pm that day he received a call regarding a fight between two women on North Street in Pembroke. When he arrived on scene, he found Mrs Glasgow in the centre of a crowd of people with visible swelling to her face. The next afternoon, he said he went to the home of Ms Saltus' mother and spoke with her, asking her to have the defendant contact him. A day later, on July 19, he was told that Ms Saltus had turned herself in at the Hamilton Police Station.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo adjourned the matter until next month, when the defence will begin to put forward their case.
