Last chance for players to claim Cup Match spot
Cup Match fever is in the air and not long from now we will know both the teams.
Tomorrow is the final trial games where several players will try to make their mark to leave an impression on the selectors. This year's trial games will be extremely interesting for a few reasons.
First, there is so much competition for places and secondly, pure curiosity as to where Landro Minors and Deunte Darrell end up trying out.
Those who are selected will also have to be very mindful of their discipline as they will instantly become role models for all to follow.
Somerset as challengers have a big nucleus of players to choose from, but it is getting the right balance that is important.
One major question is do they have room for Dwayne Leverock or has his time come to an end?
Also with so many young quality players in Somerset do they bring them to St.George's away from home for their colt year or do they wait and try them in their own back yard next year?
Somerset have one thing going for them I have to admit and that is the fact that they have several all-rounders.
Players such as Janeiro Tucker, Malachi Jones, Dean Stevens, Dion Stovell, Derrick Brangman just to name a few.
Having so many bowling options is a bonus and always something you want to have when trying to win the cup.
St.George's on the other hand are looking like champions. We have a very strong batting line- up supported by two of the best, if not the best, spinners on the Island.
Let's not talk about the fast bowling department which is looking stronger than ever.
Competition is healthy and this year's final trial will be all that, and more, as places are up for grabs. No individual can count themselves as an automatic choice.
The reality is as champions we have to make at least three changes but could there be more, who knows?
Then there's the million dollar question all of Somerset and St.George's await. Where will Landro Minors and Deunte Darrell play their final trial?
Will it be at Somerset or St.George's?
Personally speaking as coach I would love for both of them to be at my disposal in St.George's.
I rate them both very highly and if they were to come it would make the final trial probably one of the most interesting we have had for years.
Landro is calm under pressure; he has tremendous patience and a very good eye. Deunte on the other hand is just a natural.
His technique is by far one of the best I have seen any young player have for years, but what makes him special is his confidence.
Lastly, as Cup Match is the biggest game of the year locally many viewers will be watching. I cannot begin to ask or remind all players to be mindful of their conduct both on and off the field.
As Cup Match players you automatically become role models and must act accordingly.
Recently, in Bermuda there have been a few incidents that have dented our cricketing reputation and you can be almost certain that the whole world will have their eyes on this year's Cup Match.
Cricket is a gentlemen's game, it is a game that should be played hard and clean.
Good luck to all the players with potential of gaining a spot in this year's Cup Match Classic, both Somerset and St.George's.
