Boss Wainwright insists: `There's nothing to fear'

Bermuda manager Dennis Wainwright wants to see two things from his team in the Red Stripe Bowl... 110 percent effort and a fearless attitude against more accomplished opponents.

Speaking from Guyana where the team are preparing for today's opening match against Trinidad and Tobago, Wainwright urged his players not to be overawed by the reputation of their opponents. The most notable players are batsmen Brian Lara and Phil Simmons and fast bowler Ian Bishop, who was in Bermuda recently for the annual testimonial match.

"The game is played and won on the field and names don't count,'' said Wainwright, a former Bermuda international himself.

"Like I told the guys there is no `Superman' written on their chests, they are men just like us. They may have a little more experience but there are different ways of getting out.'' Bermuda's team will not be at its strongest for various reasons, so the opportunity has been presented to several players to show their worth at this level.

The likes of Dennis Archer, Anthony Braithwaite, Kwame Tucker, Peter Philpott and Keith Wainwright are all expected to be included in the side along with captain Charlie Marshall, Dexter Smith and Janeiro Tucker who will form the nucleus.

"Dexter has been here before and has played at this level so we expect him to lead the batting along with Charlie,'' said Wainwright.

"These guys want to play and they want to do well. They don't give me the impression they have come along for the ride.'' Three of the Bermuda players -- Janeiro Tucker and Kwame Tucker and Sammy Robinson -- played on Sunday for a regional team captained by Roger Harper that took on a Guyana Board XI, skippered by Clive Lloyd, in a benefit match for former opening batsman Roy Fredericks who is undergoing medical treatment in the United States.

Janeiro scored 25 and Robinson three, while Kwame did not bat though he did have a brilliant stumping. The regional team scored 200 and the Guyana Board replied with 201-9 with a couple of overs to spare.

Wainwright, a former wicketkeeper, is impressed with the promise shown by Kwame Tucker, who made his Cup Match debut for Somerset this year. And he believed the youngster's performances behind the stumps would be vital to the team during the current tournament.

"On Sunday he did an exceptional job,'' said the manager, who is paying close attention to Tucker along with coach Allan Douglas, also a former national team wicketkeeper.

"I think he has great potential. He's quite agile and he's learning fast.

"Allan and I gave him a couple of tips after the match and he listens and we're expecting great things from him. He gloves well, doesn't push at the ball but lets it ride in his gloves and that's a sign of a good 'keeper.

"He's just got to move his feet a little more and not rely on his gloves, but get behind the ball.'' From Wainwright to Barry DeCouto to Allan Douglas to Dean Minors, Bermuda has been well served in that department over the years.

In fact, Bermuda's wicketkeepers have often impressed those in the Caribbean with their glovework. Some have said this is one area where Bermuda can hold its own against the West Indies.

"You have to be able to catch good and you must like the position,'' said Wainwright.

"If you have a good 'keeper, nine out of 10 times you'll have a good fielding side. He is the key man and keeps the tempo going. He makes bad throws into good throws and bad balls into good balls and that inspires the fielding side.'' Wainwright, meanwhile, is also impressed by the attitude of the players.

"They are showing their punctuality and that's a good sign,'' said the manager. "If you say 7.30 or 9.00 they are there on time.'' Yesterday two sessions were planned, weather permitting before the team is finalised.
