Horowitz ready to defend Gosling’s title
Defending champion Joe Horowitz of the United States will be returning to defend his title at the Gosling’s Invitational later this month. And Horowitz, who edged out Nick Kenney by one shot to win last year’s title, will be joined in the tournament by several of the top players, including top local finisher Daniel Augustus, who was third overall in 2011, just two strokes behind the winner, past winner Kirk Hanefeld and PH Horgan.Entries for the $60,000 tournament close next Tuesday and organisers expect it to be fully subscribed once again at about 100 entries.“We still have a few spots left open, last year’s champion Joe Horowitz is returning and local professional Daniel Augustus is playing again this year,” said tournament official Tracy Westhaver. Also signed up are Billy Walsh, another former champion, veteran local pros Dwayne Pearman and Anthony Mocklow and relative newcomer to the pro ranks Camiko Smith.“We’re looking at half between professionals and amateurs and half of the field is from overseas,” said Westhaver. “We have about 13 or 14 amateurs from overseas coming in and a lot of repeats of the local amateurs.”Gosling’s have always been involved with the tournament which started in 1973 when Belmont professional Memmott Fraser of the UK became the first winner. The tournament’s future looked in doubt after the 1999 event when the hotel was closed and the course redesigned. The event returned to Belmont in 2004 when PH Horgan won by seven strokes. The Gosling’s Invitational remains one of the most popular tournaments locally. The top three finishers in the Open Division last year — Gray Yancey, Chris Garland and Steven Duxbury — have all signed up, along with Garland and local amateurs Hav Trott and Max Atherden. Trott won the senior division individual stroke-play last year over Atherden and Jeffrey Lindo.Top three individual stroke play net finishers, Shannon Trott and Sam Bezant — second and third last year — will both be competing. The deadline for entries is next Tuesday and the tournament will be held November 26-29 with a Pro-Am tournament on Sunday, November 25.
