Sims' sad finish costly

A stumbling finish cost Michael Sims dearly at the Nationwide Tour's WNB Classic in Midland, Texas yesterday.

And it may even prove crucial as to where he plays next year.

Cruising at two-under par in the second round and five-under par overall at the 7,380-yard, par-72 Midland Country Club, Sims bogeyed two of his last three holes, finished at even par and missed the cut by one shot.

That meant for the third successive week he won't be playing over weekend and won't be able to add to his prizewinnings this year.

Currently 74th on the Nationwide Tour moneylist, the Bermudian is certain to drop down in the standings, leaving him a mountain climb as he attempts to retain his Tour card without again having to earn his status at the end of year PGA Q-School.

The top 60 on the moneylist after the final four events, including this week's, advance to the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. And the final top 25 will earn 2010 PGA Tour cards.

Sims' hopes of joining that group now look slim.

After a first round of three-under 69, the Georgia-based pro started at the back nine yesterday with birdies at the 12th and 15th and appeared set for another promising round.

On his back nine, he bogeyed the first but quickly recovered with another birdie at four.

And all seems to be going to plan until he stumbled with a bogey at the par-four seventh and another at the par-three eighth, dropping below the four-under-par cut line for the first time.

He finished on three-under 141, 10 shots behind American Fran Quinn who posted five-under 67 yesterday to move to 13-under 131.
