Legacy of childhood trauma
Dr. Patrick Carnes deals with people suffering from sexual addiction and sexual anorexia.
He believes that many addictions have been caused by childhood trauma and he said: ?The other thing that has become very clear to me is that sometimes nobody has to touch a kid, it is living in the presence of some marriages, watching the father or mother batter each other is enough to keep a kid scared and if the kid gets scared there is an alteration of the biological strata.
?So, what I was doing here is showing people what happens in the brain with pictures of brain scans and the various ways it gets that damage.?
During his early years as a clinician he followed 1,000 families for seven years and his findings were varied and interesting.
?I found that if people were severely physically or sexually abused it would determine how many addictions they had as adults,? he said.
?So, that is what really opened my eyes that you can?t just look at getting people sober and stopping their behaviours. We really have to get to the root cause of why they were doing this.?
