Cut price deal on security devices for disabled launched

A disabilities campaigner has teamed up with a specialist security business and the Government to offer GPS devices at a discount for seniors with memory problems and people with disabilities.

LaKiesha Wolffe, of the Disability Centre of Bermuda, Investing in Care, Safety and Security, which offers devices to connect clients to emergency services and the Government combined to launch the programme.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, said a cash grant had been earmarked to fund the scheme for families and medical professionals who deal with people with dementia, Alzheimer’s and other disabilities.

Ms Furbert added that Ms Wolffe’s disability centre would also use some of the grant to maintain a disability register with “the name and basic demographic data of each person with a disability, including their disability group and their service needs”.

Ms Furbert said the information would be used to create better policies and legislation for the disabled.

A limited number of discounted devices will be available to families, as well as medical professionals, to help keep tabs on the safety of vulnerable people.

For more information, contact Ms Wolffe on 703-9912 or by e-mail to kiesha@thedcob.org.

The public can also visit www.icssbda.com or call the firm on 295-4277.

Ms Furbert thanked Dwain Smith, the owner of ICSS, for expanding the brand beyond seniors to include the disabled.
