C&W files writ against Government
legal action against Government's decision to allow a competitor to operate in Bermuda.
Cable & Wireless PLC (C&W) filed a writ in the Supreme Court yesterday calling for a judicial review of Technology and Information Minister John Barritt's granting of a public telecommunications service licence to TeleBermuda International Limited.
The long distance operator announced its intention to fight the competitor on January 30 when it lodged a Supreme Court appeal against the decision.
C&W spokesman John Instone said: "This latest action is merely a continuation of our existing appeal and raises no new issues.'' The company is concerned that Government has not paid due regard to the rights it granted under its own legislation -- The Cable and Wireless Public Limited Company (Consolidated Licence) Act, 1985.
The Act gives C&W the right to appeal a Ministerial decision.
AUDUBON TAKES UP BLUEBIRD CAUSE CLB Audubon takes up bluebird cause The Bermuda Bluebird & Longtail Society has officially become part of the Bermuda Audubon Society since the departure of Bluebird president Tommy Outerbridge.
Members of the Bermuda Audubon Society made a unanimous decision at their Annual General Meeting on June 18 to absorb the small membership of the bluebird society.
Bermuda Audubon president David Wingate yesterday explained that Mr.
Outerbridge had moved to England with his wife Angela due to medical reasons.
He added that the narrow focus of the Bluebird & Longtail Society made it a difficult organisation to keep afloat after Mr. Outerbridge left the helm.
And he said: "We feel that we can effect a smooth transition. All members of the Bluebird & Longtail Society with up-to-date membership are happily welcomed.''
