Rangers made to pay for penalty misses
Second Division Young Men's Social Club sent First Division Southampton Rangers crashing out of the FA Cup in an amazing match at Southampton Oval yesterday.
In a game of four penalties, the Second Division side hung bravely onto their lead through 13 nail-biting minutes of injury time.
Social Club goalkeeper Dyke Lawrence was their hero, saving two Rangers' spot-kicks and pulling off a series of fine stops late in the game to help his side pull off the shock of the round.
But it was only in the latter stages that it became a backs-to-the-wall job for for the underdogs. Social Club grabbed the initiative from the start, taking advantage of a sleepy opening from Rangers to make all the early going.
And their positive attitude paid off when Eric Dunkley went down under a challenge from Pernell Brangman in the 22nd minute and referee Gregory Simons pointed to the spot. Dunkley converted it himself, confidently lashing the ball into the net.
Big front man Dunkley was causing the Rangers defence problems every time he touched the ball, but he missed great chance to double the lead on 27 minutes when he sliced wide after being sent clear by Ross Parsons' slide-rule pass.
Social Club continued to run the show, but when their second goal arrived, in the 32nd minute, it owed much to good fortune. Parsons made a strong run down the left wing, cut inside the Rangers penalty area and shaped to shoot but was then cleanly tackled by Donnie Charles. The ball flew off Charles' boot into the top right-hand corner of his own net.
That goal seemed to wake Rangers up to the fact that they were staring an embarrassing Cup exit in the face.
They should have pulled one back five minutes before half-time when the lively Rohaan Simons was pushed and won a penalty. Simons took it himself, but Lawrence dived to his right to save brilliantly. The rebound bounced straight back to Simons but he blazed it over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Rangers broke through when Antwone Tucker jumped at the far post to head home powerfully from Simons' corner.
And the First Division high-fliers piled on more pressure after the break, winning their second penalty two minutes into the second half, when Sheridan Ming made a jinking run into the box and was tripped by Robert Hudson.
This time Vic Ball took responsibility, but hit a weak, side-footed penalty, which Lawrence was able to clear easily with his feet.
Social Club made Rangers pay for their profligacy with a third goal after 55 minutes. A corner was half-cleared as far as Tokia Russell, whose fierce drive was too hot for Rangers goalkeeper Randy Darrell to handle and the rebound was steered gleefully into the net by Raymond Burgess.
The Second Division side's two-goal advantage lasted only three minutes.
Simons went flying in a crowded penalty area and the referee awarded Rangers their third penalty of the match. Ming then showed his team-mates how to take a spot-kick, sending Lawrence the wrong way with a crisp right-footed shot.
In the final 30 minutes, Rangers pushed forward constantly, but left themselves vulnerable to swift counter-attacks from Social Club. It made for increasingly exciting football.
Lawrence twice reacted superbly to keep out powerful volleys from Craig Darrell and in injury time dived bravely at the feet of substitute Ryan Brunson to preserve Social Club's lead.
