Vashti Incorporated, which entered the Christian Faith Quiz for the first time this year, walked away as victors but were made to work for it at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess last month.

The annual quiz, held on April 18, was particularly poignant because it is sponsored by Mt. Zion AME Church and was presided over by the Rev. Wilbur Lowe, who has since passed away and whose funeral is today.

Vashti, made up of Valerie Ford, Gail Bulford, Jackie Bennett and Gilda Richards entered the final round of the finals in secnd place with 160 points after recording four scores in Old Testament, New Testament, Doctrine and Discipline and Trivia And Miscellaneous.

But eventual runners-up SWIM, made up of Carika Weldon, Carrie Weldon, Ellington Weldon and Sharon Hayward, went one better with four perfect rounds plus five bonus points to record 165 points.

And Mighty Men of Mercy (MMM), made it a three-way race because they too recorded a score of 160 from the first four rounds as Stanley Simmons, Tamika Williams and Robert Harvey were all perfect. Only Elwood Lambert dropped five points to spoil his bid for perfection, but the team made up for it with a bonus to stay in contention.

With competition this fierce, Hope and A Prayer, made up of Eugene Woods, Gareth Dixon, Hope Lowe and Derek Francis looked doomed for fourth place with 115 points.

As the current affairs round – with all questions drawn from The Royal Gazette – loomed, you could cut the tension with a knife, said contest organiser Brenton Roberts.

But by the end of the round, Vashti had come from behind with a perfect score plus 15 bonus points while SWIM had fallen behind after dropping ten points. MMM blew up in the round, failing to answer a single question correctly while Hope and a Prayer m,ade up some ground with 15 points but still came in fourth.

The final scores were:

Vashti Inc. 215

SWIM 195

MMM 165

Hope and a Prayer 140
