Coach Best impressed by squad's youngsters
Technical director Clyde Best was full of praise for the less experienced members of his team following last night's amazing comeback victory against Miami Fusion.
Asked what pleased him most about the performance, Best replied: "The young kids. They came on and I thought they turned the game around for us. "Damon (Ming) showed his pace down the left to beat the defender. And I think that was the turning point.'' Best might take a little credit himself. Bermuda, trailing 2-0 after 48 minutes, had just pulled a goal back when he threw on Ming, Tafari Outerbridge and Reggie Tucker in what turned out to be an inspired triple substitution.
And the way they responded will have given Best and coaches Robert Calderon and Mark Trott plenty to think about in the days leading up to the opening Shell Caribbean Cup match with Cuba on Friday night.
"We've had a meeting about that,'' added Best. "And we talked about who we want to play and why and what we want in midfield.
"We started off a bit shakily because we were not putting pressure on them.
"Valderrama is a great player and when you have a player like that who likes to dictate the tempo you should have someone closing him down. We allowed him to play.
"We have to work hard in the middle of the park and get someone in there who is going to be aggressive.'' Valderrama didn't reappear for the second half and the home side made a number of changes. But Best dismissed suggestions that that made it easier for his side.
"These guys are supposed to be pro players,'' he said. "Any time you come away from home and get a result, it's fantastic.'' Best was also excited by the contribution of Dwight Basden up front. It was Basden's determination which led to Bermuda's first goal and with a bit more luck and composure he might have had a couple himself.
"Dwight was fantastic,'' said Best. "What people fail to realise is he has not had a lot of instruction. We're giving him instructions now and he's doing things a lot better.
"And what's great about him is he's a fighter.''
