Cooled-off Zebras seeing red

nightcap at Devonshire Rec. (9 p.m.) with five-time winners PHC out seeking the scalps of North Village, winners of the title on three occasions.

But while Village will want to extend their two-game winning streak, PHC have had to regroup after consecutive losses, their latest setback coming on Sunday against tonight's opponents.

"I guess it's back to the drawing board,'' said PHC coach Jack Castle, who has seen his side plummet from first to third in the past two weeks. "We need to go back, refocus ourselves and straighten out a few things.

"It's not that we've been playing badly, we've just been missing chances and then at the other end giving away easy goals.'' The usually reliable Zebras defence held together by the experienced duo of Mike Dill and Derek (Nails) Douglas certainly has experienced its share of problems recently.

Only four goals had been scored against them in seven previous league games, but Somerset and Village combined to duplicate that number in only two games.

Castle indicated that there would be some possible changes for tonight's match as he strives to get back on the winning track.

"Nobody's place is safe when you start losing and I will look to make a few changes to turn it around and have us score some goals.'' Kenny Mills is one who may regain a starting spot after coming off the bench on Sunday due to his late arrival for the match. Mills, benched twice in the last three matches for late arrival, leads the league in scoring along with Somerset's Dwight Basden.

Ironically the return of World Cup player Sammy Swan has coincided with the Zebras losing rather than providing them with more of a boost.

Still Castle said that he will not make any radical changes but rather instruct his men to go out and perform as always with the direct attacking style that has become synonymous with the PHC.

"I'm not going to make any new approach just for them (Village). I'm simply going to deal with PHC and our problems so that we can win a game.

"There's no real revenge factor regarding them. We just want to go out and stop a team from beating us back to back in two days.'' Village on the other hand finally seem to be coming together and -- at least in the last two games -- appear to have solved their goal-scoring problems.

Plus, with Kevin Grant, Elliott Jennings, Shawn Smith and Philip Clarke back in the line-up, coach Wendell (Joe) Trott also has a good blend of youth and experience.

"I always knew we had the potential to be in the top four with the players that we have,'' said Grant, who along with Smith has returned to stabilise the defence. "We have depth and a good calibre of players and all that's really needed is for them to start taking charge. Yesterday (Sunday) we really took charge against PHC and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the holidays.

"There is really some nice harmony amongst the club right now.'' Another plus is the possible return of full-back Albert Caisey and goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams. Caisey is back out training following an injury but the status of Adams is still unclear as he lasted only a half against Hotels on Friday night before succumbing to an allergic reaction.

Utility man Cornell Castle is one who will definitely be missing tonight's match. Castle suffered a broken bone in his left arm on Sunday when he bounced off a tackle with Dill and landed awkwardly.

In all this clash shapes up as a classic with both sides having a point to prove.

PLAY IT AGAIN SAM -- Philip Clarke, on the ball, and Elliott Jennings of North Village will have to contend with Otis Steede and the PHC Zebras for the second time in three days.
