England and Rooney will rule the world!
There was major excitement for football fans around the world as the World Cup draw was made in South Africa. With the World Cup just months away it was estimated that over 350 million fans would be tuned in for the draw.
The tension was high for all Portugal and France fans as the two powerhouse teams had not been seeded in the top eight, which meant they could possibly be put in a group with one of the top teams.
France were fortunate in that they were selected to be in the host group with South Africa, and managed to avoid one of the world's elite teams. However, that wasn't the case for Portugal as they were put in the group of death with former world cup winners and favourites Brazil. In the same group with Portugal and Brazil are Ivory Coast, who will showcase one of the world's best strikers, if not the best striker, in Didier Drogba.
Well there is no secret that I am an England fan and have supported England all my life. Going into this World Cup we have been playing some excellent football under Fabio Capello. A lot is to be expected from this team. We have an abundance of quality strikers to choose from. Even I am curious as to whether Michael Owen will get a late call up. Personally, being a United fan and watching him week in and week out, he is from the Gary Lineker mould, nothing exceptional, but gets in goal scoring positions and he is a very good finisher.
Well having pondered over this all week here is my final four: Italy, Germany, Spain and England.
History tells us that if you are betting your money on any two teams to get to the semi-finals then you have to go with Germany and Italy.
These two teams are resilient. I don't know how they do it World Cup after World Cup, but they do. It doesn't matter what form they are in when the World Cup comes around they always find ways to pull off the victories. They are two very technical teams who are extremely disciplined and focused on their own game plan, hence the reason why they have been so successful.
Spain have the best striker combination in the world in Fernando Torres and David Villa. They have played some quality football, but in recent years they have not lived up to their potential or their fans' expectations. Next year I feel things will turn around for them and they will make a run to the semi-finals.
England have also been under achievers, but the one weapon that they have right now is Fabio Capello. As a coach he is one of the best in the world and has helped to make England more mentally and technically sound. Also England possess the third best player in the world in the likes of Wayne Rooney. If Rooney stays fit England will win World Cup.
There are teams who can pose a threat to those four teams and become spoilers. They are Brazil, Portugal and Holland.
Brazil pose the biggest threat as they have been World Cup winners on numerous occasions and know what it takes to win. I just do not think they have the same flair and goalscoring threat that they used to have in Romario and Ronaldo, but we can't underestimate them and count them out.
Portugal are another excellent team who have the world's best player in Ronaldo. In the last World Cup they lost in the finals. Ronaldo will want to make his mark as a true great and in order to be put amongst the greatest like Diego Maradona and Pele he has to win a World Cup. However, they struggled through the group stages and I cannot see them having the same impact as in the last World Cup.
Then we have Holland, the team who play the best football in the world by far, but have little to show for it. Holland have the potential to win it all, but they have to develop a killer instinct, that mental toughness to be able to grind games out when they are not playing well.
My two dark horse teams for this World Cup are Denmark and Ghana. Denmark had a splendid qualifying run, topping Portugal to win their group overall. Ghana are rated as the best African nation and if any African team can pose a real threat it would be them.
There is one noticeable team I left out and that is Argentina. They were once a powerhouse in football, but as of late are no longer a threat. In Lionel Messi they have a potential match-winner, but football is about teamwork and collectively Argentina struggle. They may get out of their group, but where they go beyond that will depend on their chemistry as a team.
Overall, I think this could be a World Cup to remember. There will be an abundance of quality football, but in the end only one team can win. My prediction is an Italy v England final with England being eventual winners. Wayne Rooney will rule the world. Remember, you heard it here first.
