Cuts surprise Devonshire Rec

Willow Cuts handed home team Devonshire Rec a shock 11-run loss after their hosts needed 12 runs to win off the final over.

That over lasted just two deliveries as Mark Trott skied the second delivery from Dexter Basden to long-on where Vivian Simons held the catch. Mark Trott kept Devonshire's hopes of victory alive after they lost their top bat Albert Steede for 90 in the 43rd over when the score was 183.

Steede, who struck seven fours and four sixes off 83 balls, added 31 valuable runs with Trott for the eighth wicket in taking the score from 152 to 183 between the 39th and 43rd overs. The Devonshire captain departed when he gave an easy catch to Dexter Basden at mid-off in the second over of Joseph Matthews' second spell.

Devonshire, needing to score at 4.62 an over to win, had a bad start when they lost their first four wickets in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth overs with just 17 runs on the board. Gone were Roger Trott, Erskine Smith, Winston Trott -- all lbw -- and Leon Place who was run out. Only Winston Trott with 12 reached double figures.

Steede and Mark Ray (18) edged to the score along to 70 by the 25th over when the latter was bowled by Kevin Fubler to leave the home side with the bulk of their batting gone and with an asking rate now of 6.48.

Anthony Edwards helped keep them in the game with a sixth wicket stand of 81 in 13 overs. But just when they looked like taking them to the brink of victory Edwards played a loose shot and was bowled by Richard Basden for 45.

His 56-minute knock included two fours and four sixes.

John Ray was trapped lbw by Rodney Fubler in the next over to make it 152 for seven before late resistence by Devonshire's tailenders kept the match in the balance. They needed to score 72 off the last 10 overs and then 32 from the last five.

In that time Trott and Toriano Henry added 26 for the ninth wicket in taking the score from 183 to 209. Trott scored 30 which included four fours.

Rodney Fubler was the top bowler for Willow Cuts with three for 21 from 10 overs while Matthews claimed three for 53.

Earlier Dexter Basden led the Cuts batting with 62 from seven fours and two sixes while Joseph Matthews hammered five sixes and five fours in his knock of 59 from 50 deliveries in 61 minutes. The pair added 78 for the fifth wicket in taking the score from 119 to 197.

Other valuable contributions came from Dwayne Basden (37) and Anthony Fubler (14) who added 32 for the first wicket. Richard Basden scored 25.

Erskine (Choe) Smith, the sixth bowler used by Devonshire, claimed five for 37 from 9.4 overs while Mark Trott took two for 22 off 10 overs and Edwards two for 55 from 10.
