Take a trip down Clyde Best Lane
Sporting legend Clyde Best is to get a street named after him — commemorating his Somerset origins as well as his role as “an inspiration and a trailblazer”, a Public Works spokesman said.
Starting November 1, the stretch of Broome Street adjoining Somerset Cricket Club will officially become Clyde Best Lane in honour of the former West Ham United striker’s career and public role.
“That’s where I grew up, on Beacon Hill — where a lot of it started,” Mr Best told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s not a common thing for us in Bermuda to do that. I’m very appreciative and thankful to those that have been in my corner over the years — I’ll try to continue to be successful and make them happy.”
Mr Best said he’d never set out for accolades, adding: “You just do the best you can. Whatever happens after that is what happens.
“You don’t have any control over that.”
Clyde Best Lane will run from the junction with Somerset Road to the railway trail, leaving the rest of Broome Street under its old name.
Somerset Cricket Club head Alfred Maybury said the salute to Mr Best had been a labour of years.
“People have said for a long time that this is something that should have been done,” he said. “There are a lot of formalities to have a street name changed, but we recognise the importance of it.”
One such protocol is the requirement that all residents agree to the switch — easily done for this particular roadway.
“We don’t have any neighbours — it’s just the club along that whole stretch,” Mr Maybury said.
The club where Mr Best began his sporting career will hold a ceremony honouring the name change, he added.
“Public Works has been fantastic with all their assistance in getting this done. We really appreciate the work of the Permanent Secretary, Marva O’Brien, and all their staff have done to help us make this a reality.”
