Author Evans completes his second volume on Bermuda's art history

Author Jonathan Land Evans has completed the second volume of his encyclopedia on the art history of Bermuda.

Volume one of the alphabetical reference work, giving information on hundreds of Bermuda's artists up to about 1953, was published a year ago.

The second installment covers 1954 to about 1988 and, though it is not available to buy, two copies are available to view at Bermuda National Library.

Mr. Evans told The Royal Gazette that only a small number of books were produced, with some given away to overseas libraries.

"Together, the two volumes cover several thousand artists in Bermuda," he said. "Meanwhile, I am continuing to work on my larger trilogy, a detailed history of 'Bermuda in Painted Representation'."

Readers with artwork or information relevant to the author's ongoing art history research are asked to e-mail jonathanevans36@hotmail.com.

Three papers by Mr. Evans — on art history, military history and literary history/criticism — appear in the latest issue of the Bermuda Journal of Archaeology and Maritime History.
