Celebrating Bermuda’s fathers

Joshua Simmons

Island residents regard Father’s Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow, as a significant date in the calendar, according to those questioned by The Royal Gazette.

Joshua Simmons, 15, of St George’s said Father’s Day “means spending time with your dad to see what he really means to you”.

Patrick Henderson, 53, from Pembroke, said as a father he will “take care of the family first”.

He added: “The father has to take care of the family,”

Barry Carroll, 48, from Sandys, said: “I’m going to call my children and they’re going to wish me a happy Father’s Day because I’m going to pay for the call, because that’s the kind of relationship Irish fathers have with their kids.”

Mr Carroll called the holiday “a celebration of fatherhood”.

“Parenthood is the most important job in the world and the one which you’re not trained for, one which there’s no qualifications for,” he said.

“It’s the most important job and sometimes the worst job.”

Dave Shastri, 55, from Sandys, said: “The kids want to take me to lunch but maybe they’ll make me breakfast instead.

“I guess I’m very lucky because I see my kids now who are grown up.

“I think Father’s Day is about the relationship which I have with them now.

“You only have that because you have built it up over time and the relationship I have now with my children is very satisfying.”

Jelania Hassell, 22, from Southampton, said: “Father’s Day is the day I get to show my dad how much I appreciate him, even though I do that every day. It’s just a specific day to appreciate my dad.”

However, not everyone plans to celebrate the event tomorrow.

A Devonshire man who wishes to go nameless said “I’m not a big celebrator myself,”

“They (his children) usually pop their heads in and slap me upside my head and then keep moving,”

Somers Tuzo, 66, from Smiths, said: “Father’s Day is every day of the year if you’re a father.

“I came out of a family of five and my dad had two jobs, for my mother and father it was always mother’s and father’s day, 365 days a year.

“I’ll put my feet up and watch the World Cup; I’m not going to spend any money in restaurants.”
