Residents count the cost of storm damage
Residents around Shelly Bay were this afternoon surveying damage caused by a suspected tornado which tore through the area this morning.Several homes lost roofs as high winds whipped through the area, tearing down walls, ripping branches from trees, blowing out windows and tossing around lawn furniture. The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) was not ready to confirm the damage was caused by a tornado, but that they will this afternoon survey the damage. It says it may have been extremely high winds. The storm caused a path of destruction starting at Shelly Bay, in Hamilton Parish, and crossing east through the Radnor Road area. One resident said she was awoken at around 10am by a loud crash outside her room, but what she thought was just the sound of thunder was a section of the house's roof landing in the yard.Another resident, who lives at Shelly Hall, said he was sitting at the kitchen table with his children when he suddenly saw the wind pick up.“We could see the wind on the roof whipping up the water,” he said. “I could feel the pressure change in my ears.”Seconds later he saw a wooden bench thrown across the lawn. “It came out of nowhere. There was really nothing we could do.”This morning BWS issued a severe weather warning, including threats of isolated tornadoes.“Showers and thunder will ease this afternoon as a cold front punches to our east. High pressure will move through from the west tomorrow bringing fine weather,” it said.* For more images see our mutli-media section at the end of this home page.* Were you affected?
