Bermudians arrested at Gatwick
Two Bermudian men will appear in a UK court on Wednesday charged with smuggling drugs.
Malachi Eugene Wilson Eversley, 24, and Genghis Khublai Khan Thorpe, 25, both of Pembroke, are accused of trying to bring almost ?60,000 (about $106,000) worth of cocaine each into London?s Gatwick Airport.
The pair, who were both born in Bermuda, were searched at the airport on Wednesday after arriving on a Virgin Atlantic flight from St Lucia.
They appeared at Crawley Magistrates? Court, in West Sussex, on Thursday and were remanded in custody to appear again on Wednesday.
Eversley told the court he worked in flooring, while Thorpe said he was a car mechanic.
Bob Gaiger, media relations manager at HM Customs and Excise in the UK, said last night: ?They disembarked at Gatwick South and were intercepted by customs officers who carried out a search of their bags.?
A number of bottles of syrup were found which tested positive for cocaine, he said, and Customs estimated each man had one kilo of cocaine in the solution. A kilo of cocaine would have a street value of between ?50,000 and ?60,000, he added.
