Juniors praised after Caribbean success

Captains Alex Marshall and Noah Browne have praised the hard work and commitment shown by Bermuda’s junior boys’ and girls’ squash team at the recently completed Caribbean Junior Championships in Jamaica. The team claimed second place overall with the boys’ team winning their final set of matches 4-1 over the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), pushing them to the top of the pile, while the girls earned a third-place finish with three team victories in their round robin competition.Marshall and Browne, captains of the girls’ and boys’ teams respectively, said they were delighted how things went in the Caribbean and heaped praise on each member of the squad.“Overall we played the best squash I’ve seen Bermuda play in a long time, and it showed in both our boys’ and girls teams’ results,” said Marshall. “I’m proud of every player on the team.”“I think that every player outdid themselves this year.”“It was cool for me because I won last time I was here as well,” added Browne. “We (team) never win, so it’s good to finally win, it was a really fun trip and we did what we came to do.”The team improved on their overall fourth place finish in last year’s junior CASA tournament, falling only two match wins short of defeating Guyana, who retained their title of overall champions from the previous year. The boys swiftly claimed their final victory, with the first three players each finishing off their opponents in three games. In his last match at junior CASA, Under-19 Browne again faced Kevin Hannaway, his opponent from the finals of the individuals and claimed a second win.Coach Andrew Mount was surprised how the side played and noted that for them to be so close to champions Guyana said a lot about the potential and ability in the ranks of junior squash.“From a coaching perspective there were a lot of contentious matches, a lot of pressure on the line,” said Mount. “But, sitting back and looking at it, it was a pleasure to see our athletes step up and perform.“To be honest, I really feel that coming so close to beating an organisation like Guyana . . . I really think that what this result will do is spur on all junior players in Bermuda, and parents, and the BSRA to take a more systematic approach.”Individual Championships: Boys Under-19 final: Noah Browne (Bermuda) d Kevin Hannaway (OECS) 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3; Boys Under-17 final: Nyron Joseph (Guyana) d D’Vario Thompson (Bermuda) 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8; Boys Under-13 final: Dylan Pratt (Bermuda) d Khamal Cumberbatch (Barbados) 11-9, 11-3, 11-8.Team Championships Girls: Bermuda finished third; Boys finished first.Overall Championships: Bermuda finished second.A reception for players, parents and BSRA members was held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association last night to celebrate the team’s achievements.
