Colts await BFA ruling on points
from their abandoned First Division soccer game against Devonshire Cougars.
Although concerned by the BFA's delay in ruling on the matter, Colts captain Ellington Weldon said yesterday: "I personally am not bothered by it because I realise that if they are consistent they will give us the points.'' Referee Rex Osborne was forced to stop play after 82 minutes of the match at Devonshire Rec. on January 15 with Colts leading 1-0. Cougars' fans threw bottles onto the field after an apparent equaliser was disallowed.
The BFA announced soon after that their executive committee had empowered the directors to form a special commission to review the near-riot. And yesterday general secretary David Sabir said that meetings were still being held and that "in due course the matter would be resolved properly''.
The BFA's league's committee were to "review the matter of the points before deciding if a replay will be necessary or if the points will be awarded to Colts''.
However, Weldon recalled how the BFA had dealt with similar incidents in the past -- in each case ruling in favour of the visiting team or the team not involved in the fracas.
"I would be surprised if they ruled anything but in our favour,'' said Weldon. `If they did it would not be consistent with their rulings of the past. I recall an incident between us and Southampton Rangers about three years ago when a bottle was thrown onto the field and we got the points.
"Then there was a similar incident at Wellington Oval where a linesman was struck by a bottle during a match between St. George's and Hamilton Parish and St. George's lost the points.''
