Christmas tree sales helping young sailors
Local sailors Peter Bromby and Lee White are about to continue a succesful fund-raising campaign that has helped keep Bermuda on the international map.The two Olympians have turned over their long running Christmas tree campaign to the Bermuda Sailing Association (BSA) to help develop the next generation of top sailors as well as funding their own ambitions.Although now spearheaded by the BSA, but still under the trained eye of Bromby and White, the scheme will help the youngsters compete abroad.Along with the BSA, beneficiaries include sailors from Sandys Boat Club and the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association.Bermuda Youth Sailing Campaigns, as they are called, have created a new website and online ordering system to help them reach more people and make the process easier. The unique sales formula developed by the pair provides a service to the community and in the past has helped raise funds for four Olympic sailing campaigns and one Youth Olympic regatta over the past 20 years.“The Christmas trees proved to be a big help for us when asking for corporate support in the Island’s board rooms,” said Bromby, recalling the fundraising campaigns of years past. “They were able to see that we weren’t just coming to them with our hand out, but were investing our own sweat equity to make it all happen.”The fundraising started in 1991 while leading up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics when Bromby and then crew Paul Fisher needed to bolster the coffers and came up with the idea to bring in a container of trees to sell from the Sandys Boat Club. After teaming up with White for the next Olympics, Bromby decided to pre-sell the trees by sending out flyers in the mail in September and had people pre-pay and pre-order their trees. This year local residents can go to www.trees4sail.com to pick their choice of four size ranges of Quebec balsams and have them delivered in early December. The trees are scheduled to arrive on November 27 and it’s hoped they’ll all be delivered by December 2.Volunteers have been asked to hep or donate trucking services and can the BSA office at 295-7935.More information can be obtained from www.trees4sail.com or by e-mailing info[AT]trees4sail.com.
