Trucker expresses optimism following meeting about concerns
Turnout was a little low for the meeting of the Bermuda General Truckers Association, admitted Government’s representative Dan Simmons.Director of the Public Transportation Board and acting director at the Transport Control Department, Mr Simmons said: “My purpose was simply to find out what’s going on and pass on what I can to the Minister of Transport. The use of big trucks to take away business from the licensed truckers was the main concern. Licences have very specific restrictions and it’s clear that one or two people are ignoring them. There are cases in which the law is not being enforced.”Mr Simmons did not know how quickly he could get a response from Transport Minister Terry Lister. However, trucker Peter Bromby said: “The fact that we had anyone from Government there was great, because that’s the first time in five years.“I thought the meeting, though small, went well. We certainly communicated that our situation is serious, and the Minister is going to hear that. I get the feeling they’re going to be policing better with regard to illegal trucking.”Mr Simmons said he would pass on the concerns of Tuesday night’s meeting but could not say what would follow.
