Vermont take early lead
Country Club of Vermont fired a 13-under-par 57 at Riddell's Bay Golf Course yesterday to open a one-shot lead in the team net division at the 2008 Goodwill Tournament.
Led by pro Josh Olny, team Vermont took full advantage of yesterday's moderate conditions. But with a plethora of teams breathing down their necks, the net division leaders will have very little margin for error when play resumes today at the four courses (Tucker's Point, Belmont Hills, Mid Ocean and Riddell's Bay) that are hosting this year's event.
Trailing leaders Vermont by a single shot are Sugarbush Resort at 12-under-par followed by Diamondback Golf Club, one of three teams who came in at 11-under-par yesterday.
Competition is equally as fierce in the team gross division where Cyprian Keyes Golf Club and Diamondback Golf Club are current joint leaders at nine-under-par 61 followed by Carnegie Abbey (eight-under-par 62) and Kittansett Club (five-under-par 65) in second and third.
Bellewood Golf Club (56) lead the senior net division by two-shots over Bear Hill (58) and Sunnybrook Golf Club (58) with Raleigh Golf Club (59) a further shot adrfit in third.
Bellewood (64) also top the senior gross division by a single shot over North Shore Golf Club (65) followed by Raleigh Country Club (66), one of three teams currently tied for third at four-under-par.
Last year's Bermuda Open and Gosling's Invitational champion Tim Conley (20 points) is presently tied with Steve Napoli (20 points) in the junior pro stableford competition.
Jerry Bruner (22 points) leads the senior pro division over nearest rivals Ron Branca, Donny Davis, Glen Cove and Rick Flesher who are all level on 18 points.
