Coke bottler receives environmental prize
keeping Bermuda beautiful.
The firm has received the 1993 Keep Bermuda Beautiful President's Award.
The annual award -- launched last year -- is given to environmentally conscious businesses and corporations in Bermuda.
KBB organisers said John Barritt had taken recycling to heart and had promoted and sponsored clean-ups throughout the Island.
In addition, John Barritt had been a major player in KBB's Island-wide annual clean-up.
The company's soft drink sales manager Mr. Bruce Barritt spoke of his delight at receiving a special plaque yesterday.
"I am proud that KBB has seen fit to recognise our on going community support programmes and honoured to have this wonderful plaque to grace our offices of the next 12 months.'' He added: "Nothing we do as a company would be possible without the interest and support of our employees.'' KBB president Ms Kendaree Burgess-Fairn said John Barritt had "gone beyond the norm'' in its efforts to help Bermuda's environment.
"The company's seemingly ubiquitous banners, receptacles, and messages are a constant reminder to the Island's residents to preserve this precious land so that it will remain for tomorrow's generations.'' The company -- founded in 1874 by Mr. William J. Barritt -- became the ninth international bottler of Coca Cola in 1927.
It is also the founding member of Businesses for a Beautiful Bermuda -- a group which is the largest contributor of funds to KBB.
Last year the Bermuda Paint Company won the KBB award.
