People missed the point
July 13, 2011Dear Sir,Many readers commented online that it was absolutely meaningless for Michael Dunkley to mention about “an inmate had to be picked up by jet ski after being released from Westgate because the former inmate couldn't travel through Somerset due to gang affiliations”, because people have the right to travel around on a jet ski and people have the right to travel by car, bus, ferry etc. Some of these readers also sarcastically described Michael Dunkley as a person who is “really concerned” about Bermuda. It is funny yet very sad that those readers just cannot see the real point Michael Dunkley was trying to make. His focus was not on how the former inmate travelled; his concern was on the fact that people are too scared to go around the Island because there is so much gang violence in tiny little Bermuda. That was his point. But those readers just totally ignored it, totally, totally ignored it.I think the reason that many people just could not spot the real point Dunkley was trying to make, is people are so used to the whole ‘gang thing' in Bermuda. Every now and then, we see the big bold title ‘XXX was shot on XXX street' on the front page of The Royal Gazette, and of course people talk about gang, crime and violence every single day. But it seems like, gradually, people in Bermuda have started to see gang, crime and violence as normal and daily matters; and many people have started to ignore and not to care about these social issues anymore. These social issues seem to be losing their importance to people day by day, as the social situation in Bermuda gets worse and worse. And the scary thing to me is, when I first told the two adults in my household about the Westgate inmate was found to be ‘high as a kite', they did not care at all. The response I got from those two adults was like the response I get when I tell them I just had a can of Coca Cola. As a high school student, I really have deep and strong concerns on Bermuda's future. The society today is absolutely pitiful; eventually, it's probably going to turn into “as-long-as-I'm-not-shot-or-affected-by-the-gang/crime/violence-I-really-don't-give-a-damn” kind of society.YUKI (XIAOYU) SUNPagetPs English is my second language.
