Life on the ocean wave careers forum to be held
A virtual career fair to highlight maritime careers is to be held next month.
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute event, on June 8, will give middle and secondary school pupils and college students a chance to learn more about a range of careers linked to the blue economy.
Karla Lacey, the CEO of BUEI, said: “We want to raise student and community awareness of the many oceanic livelihoods that support Bermuda and all of humanity.
“Whatever a student’s interest, natural talent, skill or passion, there is an ocean-centric opportunity to earn a living.”
Students who sign up will be able to take part in panel discussions and small group conversations with local and international guests in “fulfilling, ocean-centric occupations”.
Opportunities will include science and technology based fields, along with conservation, arts, crafts and trades.
The event will also include a “career expo” where youngsters can meet representatives of the private, government and non-profit sectors to learn about jobs, educational scholarships and intern opportunities.
The Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, the Bermuda Sloop Foundation and Dolphin Quest will be among the groups taking part in the event.
Ms Lacey said: “The diversity represented by our speakers truly reflects the variety of paths one can take to have an ocean-centric career.
“As the primary influencers in students career choices, educators and parents are encouraged to attend.
“The more knowledgeable the community is, the more support and guidance we can provide our young people with their career choices.”
The virtual career fair will be held between 3pm and 7pm at online site Hopin.
Registration, which is mandatory, can be done at www.buei.bm.
