Sims finishes one short of half-way cut
Michael Sims finished an agonising one shot away from making the second cut of his rookie Canadian Tour season, missing out on Saturday morning in the Casino de Montreal Open.
Playing in the $200,000 Players Championship, Sims was joint ninth after Thursday?s opening round after shooting a superb six-under-par 66 but undid a lot of his good work on Friday with a two-over 74.
His 36-hole four-under total would normally have been enough to ensure two more rounds of golf, but in benign conditions other players were shooting very low and the cut looked to be just out of his reach.
Weather delays on Friday night meant some players had to return on Saturday morning to complete their second rounds and once everyone was back in the clubhouse, Sims was tied for 64th and facing another short week ? the cut falling at five-under par.
Sims, who is just outside the top 50 on the money list with the $5,888 he picked up for joint fourth in the TELUS Edmonton Open, now faces a three-week Tour break ahead of the Fallsview Casino Pro Am Classic in Niagara Falls.
Former Bermuda pro Anthony Mocklow claimed the Southwest Mid-Amateur Championship in England this weekend with a one-shot victory at the prestigious event at Teignmouth Golf Club.
A birdie on the last gave him a second round 73 to go with an opening 68, which had earned him a three-shot overnight lead, and helped him claim the Dartmoor Trophy.
Mocklow, formerly a club pro in the English Midlands, regained his amateur status a few years ago and was the beaten finalist in this year?s Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club.
Now resident in England, he had hoped to compete also in June?s Amateur Strokeplay Championships but was prevented from returning because of work commitments.
