Sims in with a shout at Blackstone
Bermuda's Michael Sims shot a first-round two-under 70 at the Blackstone National Open yesterday, leaving himself with a strong chance of making today's cut.
Back on the greens and fairways after a bit of break, the pro rookie golfer produced an eagle, a birdie, a bogey and 15 pars to be tied for fifth after one round of the New England Pro Tour event. Fred Hyatt leads on four-under 68 while three others are tied for second on three-under 69.
"It was a pretty boring round. Not a lot really went on but I am pleased. It's the first time I am playing in a while.
"I just started back practising this week after a bit of a break. So, yeah, I'm happy. I didn't feel too comfortable out there but it's a start and I'm working on a few things," said Sims.
The three-round tournament is being played at a new 6,909-yard golf course - Blackstone National - in Sutton, Massachusetts, USA, and the Bermudian liked what he saw first time out.
"It's in good shape. It's new so a few things are not very mature on the course but it's fine."
Asked about what it will take to be on the favourable side of the cut, the 23-year-old said: "If I shoot 70 tomorrow (today) I'll be in by quite a way I think. I shouldn't have to worry."
