Ambitious Zelkin clinches pro card
Cup golf for Bermuda.
Zelkin, a professional and member of the Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club, was rewarded with his professional players' card after going round the Ocean View course in four-over par 74 yesterday in the final round of this week's BPGA qualifying tournament.
The 25-year-old will now be able to compete in BPGA tournaments and score points towards gaining a place in the national team to travel to the World Cup next October.
To earn the card, Zelkin had to total 304 or less after four rounds. A third-round 82, including a disastrous 12 on number 10, left him needing to fire 76 at worst in his final round.
Zelkin admitted: "I didn't play as well as I could. I lost six balls throughout the tournament and really that's too many. I got a high score at one hole on my way to an 82, so I made it difficult for myself and on the last day I knew I had to play solid golf.'' Keeping calm with his goal in sight had not been easy, he added. "At the 14th I went out of bounds and I knew I couldn't afford to waste any shots, so I was getting a little bit nervous over the last four holes.'' His 74 gave him a total of 302, two strokes inside the qualifying limit for the card, and left him looking forward to the future with confidence.
"I want to go on a mini-tour in Florida next May to try and earn some money and prove to myself that I can contend with the top players,'' added Zelkin.
Nobody else in this week's BPGA tournament field qualified.
