Bascome quits PLP branch
of party leader Jennifer Smith.
And the move increases the chances of Mr. Bascome -- passed over in favour of Deleay Robinson as Ms Smith's St. George's North running mate in the upcoming General Election -- setting up shop as an Independent candidate in protest.
It is understood Mr. Bascome, who has used talk shows to criticise the party and to boast that he has the support to win in the constituency, handed back his party card at a constituency meeting on Thursday night.
It is believed he was on the verge of being disciplined for his outspoken stand -- but quit before the branch could take action.
Mr. Bascome -- a Corporation of St. George councillor -- was said to be furious after Mr. Robinson, a top Civil Servant turned guest house owner, was picked over him.
Mr. Bascome could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
But The Royal Gazette revealed three months ago that Mr. Bascome was considering a run against Ms Smith and Mr. Robinson.
Mr. Bascome, believed to be popular locally, could dent Mr. Robinson's chances.
Mr. Robinson -- who replaced the late Leon (Jimmy) Williams -- is much the weaker of the two Opposition candidates.
And he does not enjoy the advantage a sitting MP normally has or a previous high profile politically.
The UBP in the seat are represented by golf pro Kim Swan and former Shell Oil general manager Bob Stewart.
