Cell tower opponents launch phone boycott

Campaigners against cellular towers have launched their own Internet website to start boycotting a cell-phone firm.

Communities Against Radiation Emissions (CARE) started their boycott initiative when they unveiled their website yesterday -- and began sending 3,000 boycott letters across Bermuda.

They are still fighting the Island's 38th cell-phone mast -- being built by Bermuda Digital Communications -- fearing the towers may cause cancer.

And they are calling for people to boycott BDC, which operate CellularOne phones, claiming 300 people campaigned against the latest tower at Faraway in Warwick.

CARE spokesman Steve Thomson issued a press release yesterday.

It said: "CARE urgently requests all friends, neighbours and family members Island-wide -- associated with or friends of the Warwick community -- to immediately boycott any and all services currently offered or soon to be offered by CellularOne (Bermuda Digital Communications).'' The statement said the boycott campaign began with the launch of the website to over 400 Internet search engines.

There will also be a media advertising campaign.

The CARE statement added: "Bermuda Digital Communications must respect the needs, wishes and concerns of the Bermudian public and their families.

"The forced imposition of a potentially dangerous cellular tower into our neighbourhood without consultation is unacceptable.'' BDC general manager Michael Leverock was unavailable for comment yesterday.
