Donawa lifts cross country crown

Jay Donawa is this year?s National Cross Country champion.The 31-year-old won the title over the Warwick sand dunes on Saturday in 48 minutes flat ahead of overseas-based Terrance Armstrong (52.50) and his younger brother Michael Donawa (54.40).Leon Bascome was fourth in the 7.5 mile event in 56.09 while Tracy Wright was fifth overall in 57.24 minutes and first in the Male 40-49 age group.

Leon Bascome was fourth in the 7.5 mile event in 56.09 while Tracy Wright was fifth overall in 57.24 minutes and first in the Male 40-49 age group.

Victoria Fiddick captured the women?s championship, completing her five-mile course in 43.49 ahead of Morag Roberts who was second in 54.01.

Mike Osborne won the Male 50-plus division, finishing his five miles in 47.56 with Roderick Bassett, second, in 51.45 and George Jones, third, in one hour, 10.05 minutes.

Midge Oliver triumphed in the female 50-plus age group (five miles), winning in one hour, 00.46 minutes while Clara Fleming was second in one hour, 05.57 minutes.

The Bermuda Track and Field Association event was missing several of the Island?s top runners, including Kavin Smith and Mark Morrison, who finished one-two in the recent Fall Half-Marathon, and leading females Anna Eatherley and Lynn Patchett.
