Man arrested in assault incident
yesterday morning in which a man was punched in the face.
The attack victim claims he was confronted by another man outside the St.
George's bar just after midnight.
The assailant began shouting racial abuse and, when the victim began walking away his assailant ran after him and punched him in the mouth.
The suspect was eventually pulled away from the scene by friends and later arrested by Police. He has since been quizzed by detectives about the incident.
The attacker could now be charged with assault and making racial remarks.
The law covering racial taunts is set to be amended when MPs discuss the issue in the House of Assembly later this week.
Although the Criminal Code was amended three years ago to make it a criminal offence to make racist comments, an error in the drafting of the amendment means the law only applies to comments made by phone, fax or e-mail, not in face-to-face confrontations.
