Flight diverted after punch-up

People meeting the British Airways flight at the Airport on Saturday evening were greeted with a "scene out of a movie" as Police cars and ambulances raced on to the runway to meet an emergency landing from Milan.

The Lauda Air jet diverted to Bermuda at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday after a fight broke out on board among passengers. The Boeing 767 was carrying 245 passengers from Milan, Italy to Havana, Cuba.

Bermuda International Airport general manager James Howes said the captain of the flight chose to divert to Bermuda after a fight broke out between two passengers. A 40-year old man was removed from the plane in handcuffs, while the other passenger received medical treatment after being punched in the face.

The flight departed for Havana at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Mr. Howes likened the scene at Bermuda Airport to a movie.

An Air Jamaica flight had to make an emergency landing in Bermuda on Friday morning when one of its passengers lost consciousness after an asthma attack. The Airbus 320 was flying from JFK airport in New York to Barbados when the 57-year old Barbadian woman suffered the attack. The plane diverted to Bermuda, landing at the airport at 10.30 a.m.

The flight was met by medical personnel and the woman conveyed to King Edward Memorial Hospital, where she remained for treatment. The plane continued on towards Barbados at 11.45 a.m.
