Perozzi set for ring return

Teresa Perozzi will make her ring comeback in a WBA and WBC middleweight unification title bout on September 27 at The Fairmont Southampton.

The 40-year-old southpaw will bid to unify the vacant WBC with the WBA belt that she holds.

Perozzi could face Yaharia Hernandez, of the Dominican Republic, in what will be her first bout since giving birth to a second child two weeks ago.

“We are looking at the same opponent as long as she is available,” Perozzi said.

“She wants to fight but she actually has a title fight [for the vacant IBF light middleweight belt] on April 12 in Argentina. If she wins, she has to give her opponent [Paola Gabriela Casalinuovo] a mandatory defence, so we will not know until after April 12.

“That is who we have booked at the moment, so either way we have somebody for a fight for the WBA and WBC titles.”

Perozzi was scheduled to defend her WBA crown against Hernandez at The Fairmont Southampton last November. However, the bout was postponed after Perozzi, who has a record of nine wins, four losses and two draws, became pregnant.

Having given birth to another son, Perozzi is champing at the bit to get back to the serious business of boxing.

“I think the pregnancy was actually a good thing for me because it has reignited me,” she said. “The thought of not having that fight last November made me realise how much I wanted it.

“I cannot wait to get back into the ring and I am so desperate to get my old self back — that old aggressive style — and I will be very aggressive from the first bell.

“I have already let my coach Troy [Darrell] know that this is what I want and how I want to train.

“Even though having the fight last November postponed seemed bad at the time, it has actually been a good thing for me.”

Perozzi will have a solid foundation to build upon in preparation for her next bout, having kept in excellent shape throughout her pregnancy.

“I didn’t lost my fitness because I have been doing crossfit training during the whole pregnancy, which is high-intensity, short workouts,” she said.

“The day I went into labour, I did a hard workout and felt great.

“I worked out that morning and popped out the baby and was back on my feet a few hours later.

“I had a water birth at home and, to be honest, I feel a million times better now that I am 25 pounds less.

“Since giving birth two weeks ago I have had two workouts and I feel back to normal. My fitness is right where I left off.

“Obviously, I am not running; I cannot do that for six weeks. But I am totally fine and have a great foundation to build on.”
