Fairmont doorman wins global praise
A Fairmont Southampton Hotel doorman has been recognised by Forbes Magazine for his skill in customer service.The hotel’s front end manager Nick “Doorman” DeRosa impressed Forbes contributor Micah Solomon with his service, attitude and knowledge of the Island.Mr Solomon, a best-selling customer service and hospitality author, was visiting the Island to conduct research for his new book, when he had an experience with Mr DeRosa.Mr DeRosa impressed Mr Solomon so much, that his encounter was published online and will be featured in his upcoming book, a follow-up to this year’s best-selling book High-Tech, High-Touch Customer Service.“I’m extremely excited, and glad to represent such a beautiful home and everybody here,” said Mr DeRosa. “I’m just trying to keep alive what’s been in our ancestry and family teachings, treat people on how you want to be treated.”Mr DeRosa credits Bermuda for being known for its hospitality and said he loves his career: “The best things about working here everyday is dealing with the beautiful people, from staff to locals, to guests.”He shared his secret to success: “They key to what I do, is treat everybody in the most hospitable and beautiful way, so that everybody feels like a VIP [very important person] — even the people I work with.”Fairmont Southampton’s regional director of sales and marketing, Shelly Meszoly, said she is proud of Mr DeRosa.“I love talking about Nick,” she said. “He raises the bar everyday that he comes to work. He’s been with us for a long time.”Mr Solomon met with Ms Meszoly to discuss the corporate culture of the Fairmont Southampton regarding customer service.He said the conversation immediately became about Mr DeRosa.“I was in Bermuda in vacation, and I was just totally impressed by the greeting that I got by Nick,” said Mr Solomon. “He is a phenomena, and by hiring him, they [Fairmont Southampton] had improved the performance of all the other employees in his area.”Mr DeRosa was also praised by Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert in a statement, which said: “We in Bermuda have long acknowledged Mr DeRosa as one of tourism’s shining lights and premier ambassador to the world.“Nick DeRosa epitomises what Bermudians, at their best, bring to the table in the areas of making our visitors feel welcome and in exceeding their expectations.“Now, the world is taking notice of his excellent service, pleasant manner and professional demeanour and we are extremely happy for and supportive of, this outstanding young Bermudian.”Mr DeRosa aims to stay and progress in the tourism industry for as long as he is able to.
