Premier Craig Cannonier: 'captive insurance industry makes Bermuda look good.'

Premier Craig Cannonier, in his speech to the Bermuda Captive Conference, assured the industry of the full support of the Government yesterday.He told attendees who filled the amphitheatre at the Fairmont Southampton on the opening day of the conference: “This Government is grateful for the work you have done for creating for this beautiful place, a world-class insurance industry which is second to none.”He continued: “We appreciate you, and this Government is committed to protecting this industry.”He also committed to a policy of non-interference. “It would be foolish for this Government to dictate to you how you should go. We will listen to you — that is a promise.”The Premier also gave his personal commitment to promote the interests of the re/insurance industry. “I want to assure you that I will continue to represent your industry in the light that it is — the best in the world,” he said. “I want to reassure you that it is our job to be here for you.”Mr Cannonier said: “It is important to us that we understand the business as best we can and create the opportunities to allow you to excel.”The Captive Conference opened yesterday at the Fairmont Southampton resort with a highly anticipated round-table session with almost 600 attendees expected to attend.The Industry Keynote Speaker for the event is Peter Zaffino, chairman and CEO of international insurance broker and risk adviser Marsh Inc.The Bermuda Captive Conference will run through to tomorrow at the Fairmont Southampton.
