Princess chief is upbeat on Bermuda
A year into his role as head of Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Len Czarnecki is focused on a $50 million renovation of the property.Work on a new marina and upgrades to the Pitts Bay Road hotel’s rooms and public spaces is expected to start within the next 18 to 24 months as a result of a capital injection from the Green family.Gaming and Bermuda’s tourism product are also high priorities. However, Mr Czarnecki’s biggest hurdle in the past year has been the “pervasiveness of the economic challenges” .“We’re out there globally promoting not only our brand [but] we’re carrying the Bermudian flag as well, I think that’s one thing we continue to do a good job at,” he added. “I can assure you that no successful person or organisation has ever been able to rest on their laurels.”Most important is that Bermuda keeps pace with what’s being offered at competing destinations, including gaming, which some of his predecessors at the Fairmont properties had supported.“In the context of Bermuda we compete with the world. It’s not just a small little northern part of the Caribbean anymore. Gaming is something that we can’t forget. We would be foolish not to consider it. It’s something that should be looked at very carefully.“We would welcome it being put on the table for discussion as something Bermuda can offer in addition to all the other things talked about in the national plan.”In the interim however, he’s “thrilled” about the hotel’s new ownership, a change that “brings a lot of excitement with it”.“The Green family is a long-standing Bermudian family with international business experience and that combination really bodes well for this investment,” said Mr Czarnecki. “Their ideas and plans are very much in line with what this hotel has done in the past and this hotel has been many things to many people.”He continued: “The core focus is to make sure that we remain competitive and that our current offering is up to snuff. The exciting bits and pieces down the road that will unfold over time. Like all plans, they have to be studied and really analysed and make sure that we’re working with our partners here, and that those plans really are viable and something that can produce long-term success for Hamilton Princess.“Any development, regardless of what shape or form that it takes, almost always brings jobs. Whether that’s for a short period of time or a sustained long period, that’s something that we would look forward to in making sure that we’re doing our part in the local economy.“The plans will be developed over the next few months. For me it’s very important to make sure that we employ as many Bermudians as possible, and I think with a Bermudian family at the helm that sort of has solidified that.”He remains confident that Fairmont Hamilton Princess will be in business 125 years from now.“It will still be here long after I’m gone, absolutely.”
