A Southampton man was fined $500 after he pleaded guilty to having a prohibited weapon.

Kemon Simmons, 20, of Riviera Road, admitted to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that when Police arrested him in St. George?s on June 13, they found a flick-knife with a four inch blade.

Police approached the car Simmons was sitting in after they were alerted to a fight between two men in King?s Square and noticed that the defendant appeared to be nervous.

After searching him under the Misuse of Drugs Act Police discovered a black knife and arrested him on suspicion that he had a prohibited weapon.

When questioned about why he was carrying the knife, Simmons told the Police it was for work.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions, was told to pay the $500 fine immediately or spend 50 days in prison. The knife was confiscated.

Under new Government legislation those carrying sharp weapons in public without lawful excuse could be jailed for at least three years.

Everest Trott last week denied assaulting a Police officer in St. George's.

He also pleaded not guilty to using threatening behaviour in St. George's and using threatening words in Hamilton.

The three separate offences allegedly occurred on July 15, Magistrates' Court heard.

The case was adjourned to July 20. Until then Trott, whose age and address was not provided in court, was remanded in custody.
