BFA leave it late to call off semi-finals
The Dudley Eve Trophy semi-final matches at Devonshire Recreation Club were postponed for the third time last night, this time at very short notice and with no explanation offered by the Bermuda Football Association.
Somerset Trojans were set to play Flanagan’s Onions in the opening match at 7pm but when a reporter and photographer from The Royal Gazette showed up, the ground was virtually empty and in darkness.
An e-mail finally arrived from the BFA at 8.03pm, saying only that “the games have been postponed”.
The matches were originally scheduled for Sunday, October 19 but were rescheduled and then postponed after damage caused to the lights by the storm and hurricane.
The Dudley Eve Trophy final is traditionally held on November 11 but time is running out to have the two semi-finals played before then.
Dandy Town, the defending champions, are to meet North Village in the other semi-final and Ralph Bean, the Village coach, is, like his counterparts, anxious to have the last-four games played.
“I know it is a difficult situation, that you don’t have any control over Mother Nature, which is the biggest issue,” said Bean who was informed about 5.30pm that his team’s 9pm clash with Dandy Town was off.
“We have four teams that have to deal with it.
“I’m just hoping we are able to play the games before when the finals are scheduled on November 11.
“The good thing for us is we were able to play on Sunday and also on Sunday coming, barring any other unforeseen events.
“At least we’re getting back into some playing time, I suppose.”
The postponement of last night’s matches may give the teams more time to prepare for the semi-finals, but a backlog of matches are building up, with Dandy Town having their league match with Devonshire Cougars postponed on Monday night. It was originally scheduled for last Friday.
“On the flip side you know that you’ve got a rack of games coming at some point,” Bean stressed. “Six for one, half dozen the other.”
Two more matches are scheduled for Devonshire Recreation Club on Monday night, with Devonshire Cougars playing Southampton Rangers and Wolves taking on Boulevard Blazers in a First Division encounter.
n The Corona League will resume tonight after the repairs to Goose Gosling Field were completed.
The all-weather pitch was damaged during Tropical Storm Fay and all fixtures put on hold while supplies were shipped in and the surface mended. Games postponed over the past two weeks will be rescheduled.
North Village and B&V United FC get the action under way tonight at 6.30pm.
