Stand Up Bermuda launches website, plans a peace walk
Anti-violence group Stand Up Bermuda has launched its own website, and will host a peace walk next month. The walk, called the “Stand Up for Change Peace Rally,” is scheduled to be held on June 26, with members walking from Dockyard and St George’s, with both groups meeting at City Hall.Once in Hamilton, the organisation will host motivational speakers and live music in an effort to unify the community and send a message against violence.Since 2009, there have been 16 fatal shootings on the Island, with five taking place this year.Founded on Facebook by former gang member Jahma Gibbons as a way of bringing the community together, Stand Up Bermuda received more than 450 friend requests in less than a week.Since then, the organisation has selected a committee of 11 members, including Gaynell Hayward, Jeff Sousa, Juanita Leshore and Scott Smith.Ms Hayward has promised that the group will have a strong presence during this year’s Bermuda Day festivities, with flyers and T-shirts.On its website, the group said: “The Island is in a state of emergency and needs change to happen now.“It’s not enough to just want change in order for it to happen, we have to come together as a people, identify the issues, strategise and plan for implementation of change, and then we have to act.“None of this can happen if we are sitting down. We must stand up for what’s right or fall for all things wrong.”Useful website: www.standupbermuda.org
