Government tonight issued updates on the full-scale clean up operation continuing in the wake of Tropical Storm Fay, after a meeting of the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO).

“All agencies are making steady progress restoring Bermuda to a sense of normalcy,” Premier and National Security Minister Michael Dunkley said.

“I want to urge residents to be safe, stay off the roads, and to check on neighbours, especially our seniors. I am confident in the ability of both government and private sector agencies to respond effectively to all calls for assistance. Already power is being restored and roads are being cleared. The EMO will convene again tomorrow morning and I expect we’ll have regular progress reports following that meeting.”

As it currently stands the EMO can update on the following:

Road crews continue to work to clear debris, downed power lines and felled trees from the Island’s roadways. Crews will work through the evening to clear debris and the public is strongly encouraged to stay off the roads so that work crews can conduct the necessary clearance work.

There is a substantial embodiment of the Bermuda Regiment. Those soldiers will assist with the clearance of debris on the Islands roads.

The LF Wade International Airport is now open to service the evening flight arrivals. Residents are encouraged to call their respective airlines to get latest updates on scheduling.

The latest Belco update as of 5.30 pm indicated that there are 18,588 customers without power and they are working to restore power to those homes.

All Government Offices will be open tomorrow. However all schools will remain closed so that the necessary assessments can continue to be conducted.

It should be noted however that teachers have been asked to attend their respective schools and assist their principals in ensuring school readiness.

All public transportation (buses and ferries) are suspended this evening. Ferries will operate as normal tomorrow morning. Regarding buses, assessments continue regarding roadways and the public will be updated tomorrow morning regarding the resumption of regular bus service.

To assist residents with the clearance of debris, Marsh Folly and Tyne’s Bay Waste Treatment Facility will be open tomorrow from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm. All dumping fees will be waived.

If individuals need tarpaulins to cover roof damage, they can collect from Warwick Camp or the Government Quarry from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm.

The Emergency Broadcast station at 100.1 FM is the official source for information regarding post storm activity and restoration efforts. It is currently operational.
