Simoes returns to Jamaica - on five times more money than Bermuda job
Rene Simoes will return as manager of Jamaica's national team - earning nearly five times as much as he would have done, had he taken over as Bermuda's technical director.
Simoes resigned from the Reggae Boyz in February 2000, but will take up the position again on January 5, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) announced. He replaces Bora Milutinovic, who was fired last month.
Simoes had applied for the Bermuda technical director's job, but later withdrew his application, as reported in yesterday's Royal Gazette.
It is believed Simoes wanted more money than the $125,000 salary the BFA is offering.
The Jamaica Observer reported yesterday that the 55-year-old Brazilian would earn $600,000 (US) annually over three years.
JFF president Horace Burrell said the Brazilian will bring along Glydston Ananias, Alfredo Montesso and goalkeeper coach Chio Santos as assistants.
His coaching staff trio will each be paid $180,000 a year over three years.
Simoes will be responsible for the men's and women's teams, according to Burrell.
Simoes guided Jamaica to their only appearance in the World Cup finals in France in 1998, where they were eliminated in the first round of the 1998 World Cup, losing to Croatia and Argentina, then beating Japan.
