Nine lambs born in one week

Brand new: One of the lambs takes its first steps

It may not be spring in Bermuda, but there’s a new burst of life at Wadson’s Farm.

In the past week nine lambs have been born.

“We have had a real burst of lambs in the last week,” said farmer Tom Wadson. “It does tend to happen in spurts, but nine is quite a spate in the space of one week.

“It’s going as well as we would expect.”

Mr Wadson has a flock of 35 Dorper ewes that are a cross between Somalian Black Sheep and British Dorset Sheep.

The flock is kept in a field close to the main farm in Southampton.

The Dorpers are ideally suited to Bermudian conditions because they naturally shed their wool when it gets hot.

Furthermore they breed in any day length and therefore can give birth to lambs all year around.

Mr Wadson added: “The Dorpers have done incredibly well in Bermuda and we’re really pleased with how the lambing has gone so far.”
