Brown's not in danger of losing job - Clarke

Dennis Brown’s job as coach of Devonshire Cougars is safe at least for the time being.By their own lofty standards Cougars have been anything but a model of consistency since Brown took over the helm of the FA Cup champions at the beginning of the season. The Big Cats have blown hot and cold in the Premier Division this campaign, dropping precious points against teams they normally get past without shifting through the gears.Cougars’ indifferent league form has fuelled speculation that Brown’s job maybe in jeopardy and according to club sources the team’s recent stalemate with St George’s Colts hasn’t done the coach any favours. However, when approached on the matter yesterday Devonshire Recreation Club (DRC) president Craig Clarke moved swiftly to defuse the situation by throwing his weight firmly behind the ex-Somerset Trojans and Bermuda defender.“Dennis’ job at the present time is secure and I can’t see us getting rid of him midway through the season,” he said. “There maybe some fans rumbling for a change of coach but at the end of the day Dennis is contracted to Devonshire Rec to perform a task and at present we have no intention of removing him.“At the end of the day the executive branch of Devonshire Rec will determine who coaches Devonshire Cougars and nobody else.”Clarke conceded that his club have not lived up to expectations so far this season but is adamant that Brown should not bear the brunt of the blame.“We can always blame the coach but he is not the one performing on the field,” he stressed. “At the end of the day the coach doesn’t play football.“Sometimes in football you get a new coach but things don’t work out the way you want them to during the first season. But the season isn’t over and at the end of the day I think Dennis is still a good coach and the players are just starting to learn what to expect from him. I think Dennis will be okay.”Clarke said Brown’s performance during his first year on the job will be assessed at the end of the season before any consideration is taken to extend the coach’s contract.“The executive branch of Devonshire Rec hired Dennis and it will be the executive branch that will make a decision at the end of the season when we do a post-mortem and make that final determination,” Clarke added.“Maybe there are some people who want him to leave but he is under contract with Devonshire Rec until the end of the season and possibly next season. And I am confident Dennis will be returned for next season.”Brown dropped a bombshell during the previous off season when he severed ties with Trojans who he had coached back into the top flight. As for Cougars’ indifferent league form of late, Clarke said: “We have not had the best of runs in the league but at the end of the day that happens in football.“The team has played certain games good and we have some of the best players in Bermuda. But at times we have lacked application and at the end of the day sometimes the ball doesn’t drop for you or results don’t go your way.“Yes we’ve slipped in the league a little bit ... but we are still battling on and hopefully we will have some success by the end of the season.”
