St George’s lose appeal
St George’s have lost their bid to have the points awarded to them over a recent match with Willow Cuts that was abandoned because of rain.
The decision by the Bermuda Cricket Board committee was confirmed today, meaning that St George’s will finish bottom of the Logic Premier Division and thus be relegated while Cleveland, who thrashed St George’s on Sunday, will play Western Stars in the play-off match for the second time in three years.
St George’s had written to the BCB requesting the points from the August 24 match at Somerset when, despite the rain, the pitch was not prepared.
Somerset, as the host club, stood to have points deducted if they were found to not have fulfilled their obligation to prepare a wicket for Willow Cuts to play on.
Yesterday, the BCB confirmed that the abandoned match will be a no-result, with both teams receiving five points.
“The BCB invited submissions from all stakeholders in this matter after receiving the umpire’s report on the match,” said Nyon Steede, the chairman of the cricket committee.
“Both Somerset and Willow Cuts responded. The committee carefully reviewed the relevant circumstances and decided to declare the match a no result. This awards five points to each team.”
Cleveland and Stars will now play the play-off match on Sunday at St John’s field, forcing the Twenty20 matches involving the two teams to be switched.
Cleveland’s match with Bailey’s Bay has been brought forward to Saturday at Sea Breeze Oval at 3pm, while the Southampton Rangers-Western Stars match will be an evening game played next Thursday at Somerset Cricket Club.
