Say hello to autumn
When it comes to matters of dress, one should never be first in the fashion nor the last out of it, someone once said.
Truth is, timing matters when it comes to style. And figuring out how to dress when you’re in between seasons is equally as important.
Fashion magazines are stating that now is the time to put away those shorts and flirty summer dresses as we edge closer to the start of autumn on September 23. They suggest that in a few short weeks we should start rummaging through our closets for the jeans, boots and sweaters worn months ago.
That might be jumping the gun for residents of hot, humid Bermuda, but it’s never too early to plan.
The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle Section asked three young women to give us their tips on how they get their wardrobe ready for fall.

How would you describe your style? Basic and classic. I try to find pieces that are sophisticated and mature, ready for a meeting, but ready for cocktails after work.
Where do you find fashion inspiration? I don’t follow the trends. I tend to just walk into a store and if I like something I will buy it. It’s usually just something that pops out at me. I’m a window shopper, so if I see it in the window and like it, I will go in and buy it.
What’s one fashion piece you miss from your autumn wardrobe? My knee-high boots. They are comfortable and I like the way they look. I love wearing boots, both flats and ones with heels. I just like the style.
What advice would you give to someone looking to transition their summer wardrobe to cooler weather gear? I usually start transitioning in October or November. Even before it gets cold I start to wear my fall stuff. I might start with the jeans, then will pull out the scarves, long-sleeve shirts and sweaters. I won’t wear jeans in the summer so I start with that and the leggings.
Samantha Astwood, 23, in-transition
How would you describe your style? My style changes daily. Every day I feel different and wear different things but I always have on a hat, that’s for sure. I just love hats, even before Pharrell [Williams] started wearing them.
Where do you find fashion inspiration? One thing that inspires my dress is the weather and I’m always on style.com. I like the street style and just to look at what people’s adaptation of streetwear is and how they can take contemporary and trendy things from the fashion runway and wear them in an everyday kind of way.
What’s one fashion piece you miss from your autumn wardrobe? Colours, black especially, because I like to wear the colour, but it’s hard in the summer considering the heat in Bermuda. Black is simple.
What advice would you give to someone looking to transition their summer wardrobe to cooler weather gear? Just accept that things are going to change. When it starts to get cooler you can’t wear the sandals and things like that, so accept it and work with it. You can wear dress shoes or sneakers instead. Or instead of wearing spaghetti straps you can turn that into tank tops and then a shirt, then a long sleeve shirt, so it progresses with the weather.

How would you describe your style? I just wear whatever I feel comfortable in. I don’t put a whole lot of thought into it.
Where do you find fashion inspiration? I tend to get inspired by looking in magazines and TV. If I see something I like I will replicate it to fit my style.
What’s one fashion piece you miss from your autumn wardrobe? Definitely jeans, boots and scarves. I like wearing them, it’s just not cold enough. Especially scarves. I am a scarf fanatic. It’s the one accessory I don’t mind wearing all the time.
What advice would you give to someone looking to transition their summer wardrobe to cooler weather gear? As soon as the weather starts getting cooler I will just start moving my winter clothes in that way. I will start wearing longer items and then the boots will eventually get brought out. But it really does depend on the weather because it can be hot in December or January.
