Duffy 20th at World Triathlon Championships
Flora Duffy finished 20th in the 60-woman elite field at the World Triathlon Championships over the Olympic distance in Edmonton, Canada, yesterday.
The Bermudian clocked 2hr 3min 9sec in a race that was won by Gwen Jorgensen, the American superstar, who produced yet another come-from-behind effort on the run.
Duffy’s splits were 19:14 for the 1,500 metres swim, 1:05:50 for the 40-kilometre bike and 36:26 for the 10km run. She did not make the lead pack out of the swim, which ultimately cost her a higher place finish.
Jorgensen’s winning time was 2:00:05, chased home by the New Zealand pair of Andrea Hewitt in 2:00:21 and Nicky Samuels in 2:00:31.
On Friday, veteran Steve Petty finished a creditable 26th out of 42 finishers in 60-64 age category of the World Sprint Triathlon Championships in 1:28:38, while Joel Matthews, in his first World Championships was 70th out of 78 in the men’s 35-39 age group in 1:20:30.
The sprint distances were over 750 metres swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
